The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted digital technology’s vital contribution to healthcare services. Embedded within new ways of working, it is helping to reduce face-to-face visits and keep care home residents and staff safer, delivering improved outcomes for the elderly population.
Before the pandemic, many healthcare providers were already adopting digital technology to help deliver the Enhanced Health in Care Homes (EHCH) model. Remote monitoring started to improve access to care for care home residents and help tackle the growing numbers of avoidable emergency admissions to A&E.
Introduced to help the NHS manage its COVID-19 response, CliniTouch Vie’s digital remote monitoring technology has enabled the GP teams at Rushey Mead Health Centre to provide continuity of care for their patients remotely, helping to ensure vulnerable patients remain safe and minimise avoidable hospital admissions.

- Hear the experiences from Dr Amit Rama, GP Clinical Lead at Leicester’s Rushey Mead Health Centre who have been using remote monitoring for 60 care home residents through the concept of the ‘virtual ward’

Dr Amit Rama
Dr Amit Rama MBChB, MRCGP(2017), BSc (Hons), Adv Dip PCMH has worked as a GP in Leicestershire since 2017. He took on the role as GP Clinical Lead of Spirit Rushey Mead Health Centre in 2019, working with Spirit’s mission statement of “Making Health Easy”. He has worked on improving the quality of healthcare being delivered at this surgery by proactively working alongside patients & staff. He is a forward thinking GP and keen to improve patient care with the use of technology, where able, to benefit both patients & clinicians in delivering the best care in a safe way.
Tim Robinson
Tim is Commercial Director at East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), one of 15 AHSNs nationwide, which operate as the innovation arm of the NHS. The AHSNs are commissioned by NHS England and NHS Improvement and the Office for Life Sciences to identify, test and spread innovation to help the NHS provide the best patient care.
Tim has a wealth of experience in health and care innovation and transformation coupled with extensive commercial and industry expertise, with a career spanning over 20 years working for the NHS and health and care SMEs. He is also a member of a number of regional and national strategic groups relating to digital health innovation, including the Midlands Digital Collaboration Forum and acting as the Midlands lead for NHSX’s new Innovation Collaboratives.
Pamela Penn
I’ve been working in healthcare in and around the NHS for over 15 years, I have worked in remote monitoring, pathway redesign with NHS clinicians and helped create remote monitoring technology in my past lift at O2, Telefonica. I am passionate about creative redesign of services to enable a different view of healthcare services within a population. We must refocus and keep developing healthcare as the world and times evolve. I am passionate about the mix of clinical and holistic activity that enhances healthcare and how we blend that into everyday life and enhance a patient’s outcome, enhance people’s health. I believe with a positive attitude, we can achieve anything!
Dr Noel O’Kelly
Dr Noel O’Kelly joined Spirit Digital as their Clinical Director following his career within the NHS as a GP, GPwSI in Respiratory Medicine and latterly as an Associate Medical Director at Leicestershire Partnership Trust. He currently also works as the primary care lead for the redesign of respiratory services in Lincolnshire STP. Noel has won awards for his work in redesigning services for long-term conditions within the NHS and has a passion for the use of digital technology within clinical pathways.
