Low calorie diet programme
Delivering an intensive weight loss and maintenance behaviour change programme for people living with Type 2 diabetes.
Spirit’s low calorie diet programme is designed to help people lose weight, improve their blood sugar control, reduce their diabetes medicines and, potentially, achieve diabetes remission.
The programme is based on the DiRECT study1 approach which investigated the impact of an intensive weight loss and weight loss maintenance programme for people living with Type 2 diabetes. In the DiRECT study, at 12 months, 46% of participants were in remission and 25% had achieved more than 15kg weight loss.
Our programme is broken down into the following stages across 12 months:
- Screening and Initial Assessment
- Stage 1 – Total Diet Replacement (weeks 0 – 12)
- Stage 2 – Food Reintroduction (weeks 12 – 18)
- Stage 3 – Weight Loss Maintenance (weeks 18 – 52)
The programme is led by a trained health coach to support patients. Each interaction involves a behavioural change and motivational approach in which the participant is encouraged to identify any difficulties or problems and suggest possible solutions. This approach aims to help participants build their confidence and problem-solving ability, making positive changes towards a healthier lifestyle.
The programme can be delivered face-to-face and via remote communications with participants, helping to engage and support participants on their journey.
Data is collected throughout the programme, capturing the participants progress and sharing the results with their relevant healthcare professional. This includes clinical biomarkers, quality of life outcomes and patient satisfaction at agreed data points.
